HOP NEWS CHRISTMAS 2001

Merry Christmas and a very happy and prosperous New Year from all the team at Charles Faram & Co Ltd.

Hops for packingThe 2001 hop harvest is now all gathered in and is being assessed and allocated ready for despatch. Indications are that the crop has been slightly below average in yield with alphas within the normal ranges (apart from one or two strange results!) The crop in the south-east seems to have suffered from the dry weather during the summer, which seems crazy when most of this area was underwater in October last year! The West Midlands grower’s yields were also below average but most managed to get rain at the right times and so the conditions were a little more favourable. Generally quality has been very good with a few making choicest, a small number of grade 2 but most achieving grade 1 standard. Well done to the growers!

HOP FORUM & TRAINING DAY
September
Thank-you to all of you who attended our hop days at Claston. Hops at Claston training dayThe attendance figures were staggering and we hope that your journeys to Herefordshire were considered worthwhile. Our problem now of course is how to match it next year! Any suggestions would be gratefully received! New varieties (including the aphid resistant hop) are now available on a limited basis for anyone who would like to try some
LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW….
Hopyard at Christmas A seasonal picture for our Christmas newsletter! As we very rarely seem to get any snowy moments in the UK hop industry these days we have to thank our American growers at Puterbaugh Farms for this picture. The American market has been very difficult this year with different market conditions for aroma and high alpha hops. Shortages of aroma varieties have caused high prices for Cascades, Mount Hood, Willamette etc. but high alpha hops have been in abundance giving the growers little return for their efforts during the year. In Germany growers are experiencing similar problems but without the high premiums for the aroma varieties. So not a lot of Christmas cheer there then!
